The Forge, Slindon
The charm of The Forge is that it is run by the local community. A quick cycle around the village tells you who the local community is (despite being only 10 miles from Bognor and Littlehampton, Slindon is the opposite of deprived). Expect to be served by a public school gap year student or their grandma! The welcome is always friendly, the food and drink good quality and the service charming (but not the most efficient). But visit with a large group at your peril!
The location of The Forge is perfect for the Chichester cyclist. From Chichester, you have a choice of time trial practice along the A27 or undulating through the back roads to the Downs. It’s a great venue for a late stop when returning from Whiteways.
The Forge is very cyclist friendly – in 2015 it hosted Blazing Saddles Portsdown Time Trial League Event and the refined staff certainly do not turn their noses up at the sound of clicking cleats or the sight of sweaty lycra. A small range of puncture repair kits is available and the local shop provides a great range of interesting locally produced, proper energy foods, for those who cannot stop for a homemade sausage roll.
For small groups, The Forge is an ideal destination, particularly if you are not after fast-food. For larger groups, the attached shop is a great snack stop.
