Compton Cafe and Village Stores

We discovered the Compton Café in the days when Olly used to struggle to keep up (it is hard to imagine, I know). Since then it has remained a firm family favourite.

The combination of shop and café have made it a perfect place for father and son – a coke, a warm homemade sausage roll and a chocolate bar for Olly; a coffee and homemade cake for me.

Compton is also a haven for those persecuted by their mobile devices – I have never had a signal there and never wanted one – it is a good place to talk. The café is blessed by its location – it is the perfect place to race to. From the north, the climbers can escape up the slopes of Harting Hill and then get chased to the café on the long descent. From the south, the false flat from Walderton creates a lung-busting time trial out of a race for cake.

This is not a place to come with a crowd – there is only space for fifteen or sixteen inside – but it is the perfect place for a small group. In the summer, the south-facing tables and chairs make it very hard to leave.
